When students learn about ancient civilisations and what life was like in those times, wouldn’t it be great if they could actually get a glimpse outside their textbooks and in the real world instead? Well, this tour of Petra in Jordan could be the perfect start. Join our host as we take you through this enchanted city of ruins and try to uncover the hidden beauty in its many temples, caves and tombs and learn why it earns its place as a World heritage site.
Holding a significant geographical location between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, Petra was built by the nomadic Nabataeans of the Arabian region, as their capital city, by cutting rocks and mountains. Half-built and half-carved, Petra remains surrounded by mountains and encloses many gorges and passages. This ‘Rose City’ from the 4th century BC earned its name from the pinkish coloured rock that was cut and carved to make way for it. Roman influences can be seen throughout the ruins especially in the Corinthian columns and the amphitheater. You will also see a fantastic water system that ran all through this ancient city.
As we proceed through the narrow gorge that serves as the entrance (the Siq) to the rock-cut city, we find ourselves suddenly at a clearing facing the beautiful pink Khazneh or the Treasury building, which was carved by hand into the cliff. Said to have been originally used as a mausoleum, the Treasury earned its name because it was believed to hold many precious treasures. We walk onwards passing the Street of Facades and the Royal Tombs, both ornamental tombs marked by impressive facades carved directly into the stone. The many mausoleums led to the misconception that Petra was a necropolis, for many centuries. It wasn’t until early 19th century that archaeologists discovered this lost city and its many wonders. The beautifully carved Monastery façade, the amphitheater seating 60,000 and the royal Pharaoh’s Castle speak much of Nabataeans culture and their way of life.
Through this live, interactive tour, young audiences are certain to understand ancient civilization and appreciate them better, while enjoying splendid views of the lost city Petra.
