Overview

Portugal’s capital city has an intriguing history and offers many stories of valour. Located at the edge of the European mainland, they have traditionally had an advantage in seafaring. It can safely be said that with Vasco da Gama’s discoveries of India, Brazil and other prominent countries, Portugal paved the way for globalisation. Join us on a tour of Lisbon as we take you to the downtown area of the city with a lively presenter who shares wonderful stories of the city and country.

Our tour begins at one of Europe’s most magnificent squares – the Praca do Comercio. The medieval palace that once defined this square was completely destroyed in the terrible earthquake of 1755 when most of Lisbon city was razed. Whatever you see at the square today was built in modern rational architecture influenced by the Industrial Revolution. Surrounded on three sides by the typical yellow buildings from the Pombal era that open to the Tejo estuary, this large square was the reception hall of yesteryears. Many a king and head of state disembarking ships were received right in this square, until the advent of passenger air travel. It was also the grounds where seafarers used to return and display their exotic finds from foreign lands.

The presenter crosses the square and walks towards the central arch that can’t be missed – Arch of August Street – that serves as the entrance to Lisbon’s downtown area identified by the broad, pedestrianised August Street.  A long cobblestone street lined by shops and fashion stores on either side with many littler alleys and roads cutting across, August Street is perfect for an evening stroll. As you walk along the street, keep an eye out for the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, and the intricate robust metal elevator built by none other than a student of Gustave Eiffel.

The session is perfect for school children with our presenter eager to tell you stories from Lisbon’s past, and to show you around his home town. They’ll be thoroughly excited to know more about this Portuguese city and its connection to a few of the major countries of the world.
