The prophet Muhammad is said to have buily the first mosque in the courtyard of his house in Medina. Today mosques around the world follow some of the same principles that the prophet established in 622 A.D. Muslims offer prayer in the large open space or courtyard in the mosque. Every mosque has a ‘mihirab’ – a decorative feature that shows the direction of Mecca- and the direction where worshippers face during prayer. Mosques offer prayer 5 times a day. Besides hosting prayers, mosques also function as places of public gathering.
