Overview

Buddhism is a religion that dates back more than 2500 years ago. It was founded by prince Siddhartha Gautham who left his princely life to find answers to life, eventually attaining enlightenment as the Buddha’. With close to 480 million followers, Buddhism is considered one of the major religions in the world.

Followers of Buddhism do not believe in a deity but instead focus on attaining a state of inner peace and wisdom. While it originated in India, Buddhism spread to other parts of the world and is most practised in East and Southeast Asia. It is practised widely in Sri Lanka where there are more than 6000 monasteries and over 15,000 monks. Sri Lanka is home to some of the most fascinating Buddhist temples including a temple in the city of Kandy which is said to house a tooth of the Buddha.
