Overview

On this session, students will experience the local culture in Buenos Aires, which is very unique, different from the rest of the world. The culture of Argentina is strongly influenced by Europe, as seen in their use of Spanish and cuisine. Even though most Argentinians do not have Italian roots, they proudly refer to themselves as Italians because of the significant impact of European ideas in Latin America.

Buenos Aires has a well-known creative community that no other major city in the world can match, as stated by many people. According to legend, one-third of all artists who come to Argentina start their career in Buenos Aires, therefore it stands out from other cities because to its outstanding nightlife and leisure activities, which are held on a daily basis with festivals and events.

On this session, children will explore the local culture. Amongst other things they will learn all about the national drink of Argentina during this in-depth exploration of Yerba mate, both a beverage and a social ritual that are 'steeped' in tradition. This caffeinated tea was originally consumed by the indigenous peoples of South America before becoming a favourite of gauchos, everyday Argentinians and even the Pope!

The Mate is not just a drink...it's a cultural habit. Unlike other beverages, there is a whole set of rituals around Mate. In learning about Mate children will learn about local practices and traditions. They will also gain a better understanding of the history of the indigenous people.
