Overview

Each year, Earth Day brings together millions of people from around the planet in support of the environment and to take action to save the world. The theme of this year's Earth Day is “Restore our Earth,” and it's all about reducing our environmental footprint and fixing the damage we humans have already done. We are inviting schools to join us and make a difference, this Earth Day.

On this complimentary virtual tour, you will travel to a wildlife centre in Costa Rica. The centre is an ideal example of someone who is working to restore our planet by taking care of injured and orphaned animals and birds. You will meet rescued sloths and hummingbirds and also enter into a competition to design a postcard that will ultimately help build a hummingbird garden at the centre.

Did you know that of the 300 species of hummingbirds in the Americas, 51 reside in sunny Costa Rica? Hummingbirds live on mountaintops, lowlands, dry forest, scrubland, even desert – and they love the tropical rainforest which is preserved and protected in Costa Rica.
The wildlife centre has been working to make the environment ideal for hummingbirds and is developing a flower garden that will attract the little hummers. Here, these nectar-loving birds will find plenty of nourishment for the energy needed to power that famous wing speed  – up to 100 beats per second.  So much faster than the eye can see, their unique wing power enables them to hover over the local foliage while their long beaks probe for the richest nectar at the bottom of long tubular flowers.

On this session you will  learn about hummingbirds.  You will also get up and close with sloths and hear about how they are looked after.

After the session, children will be invited to enter into our ‘Design an Earth day post card’ competition. You will need to make a special sketch based on the Earth day theme (so it could be a drawing/ painting depicting the planet, wildlife or about protecting the environment). The winner’s painting will go on a special postcard that will be part of the merchandise for the wildlife centre. The centre will put these up for sale, so it goes towards the development of the hummingbird garden.

Ps: We are working with the centre to create the hummingbird garden. Interested schools can also have a personalised flower patch in your name. All you have to do is book any of our stand-alone sessions.
