Queen of the Adriatic, Venice is one the most charming little island cities in the region. Its romantic canals and pretty little gondola boats have been the face of many a postcard since the longest time. This city lies on an archipelago of 118 islands, most of them connected through bridges numbering nearly 430. The waters of the canal almost seem to intrude into many houses as they make their way to the Adriatic Sea. Join us for a walk through this city to learn a little about the history of Venice and life on the islands, as the perfect getaway to start off your week.
St. Mark’s Square or Piazza San Marco as it is locally known, is the centre of the island home to several prominent buildings on the banks of the Grand Canal. The Basilica, Doge’s Palace with its Bridge of Sighs, the Clock Tower – each have a rich history to boast, and our presenter is bound to enthrall you with captivating stories about them all. You may also observe that the buildings around the square have varied styles of architecture, depicting the different eras to which they belong. The Basilica of Saint Mark was constructed in the Byzantine period with many of the materials being directly brought in from Constantinople. Right next to it lies the Doge’s Palace, built in a Venetian Gothic style, and most of the other buildings in the Square are typical of the Renaissance period.
We walk across the square into the narrow cobblestone paths leading to the many residences of the locals and onwards to Rialto, the commercial centre of Venice. One of the best things about walking through Venice in small groups, is that the whole city is pedestrianized, so you never have to worry about watching out for vehicles. Unless, of course, you’re in a ‘vaporetto’ (water taxi) and the boatman has veer away from the enchanting gondolas coming along the canals)
Before we end the walk, we offer groups a pre-reserved time slot to take in breathtaking views of the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge from one of the only rooftops in Venice to offer such dreamy views.
